From Lady Ga Ga’s meat dress to Jennifer Lopez’s dangerously low Versace, Vogue looks back at stars who’ve defied the red Rug fashion rules Through the Years

Award shows are, for most intents and purposes, a stage–where fashion vision plays , where talent is more celebrated, and recently, an instant to consider a stand. But statements can be found in various shapes and fashions –and cuts and colours, too. Through the years, the reddish carpethas hosted its fair share of renegades, subverting the sartorial rules during the moment.

Unforgettable looks from the record comprise Bjork’s swan dress, that commanded tune at the 2001 Oscars. Not content with rejecting the traditional sweeping gowns, the Icelandic singer took matters much further when she ceased to’lay an egg’ on the red carpet.

Lady ga-ga caused a lot of stir at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards when she came in a dress made entirely out of raw beef. Even though many took it to be a statement in support of animal rights, the star revealed she wanted her jaw-dropping outfit to show that”when we don’t stand up for what we believe in… we’re likely to have as much rights as the meat in our bones.”

The others who have thrown out the rulebook from the window involve Cher, who defied all red carpet convention by baring her midriff at the 1986 Oscars. The singer–that said she did not wish to look as a”house wife in a night dress”–assured she controlled attention within her Showgirl-inspired two-piece and striking feathered headdress by legendary fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie, although not being nominated for an award on her role in Mask.

While revealing off flesh on the red rug is significantly more common nowadays, Elizabeth Hurley managed to shield her place in fashion history in 1994, wearing that plunging Versace dress held together with huge gold safety hooks at the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral. With a bold thighhigh split and shattered sides, remains often referenced now, over 2 decades after.

Another often discussed power move is Julia Roberts’ feminist statement at the 1999 London premiere of nottinghill –if she showed off her armpit hair at a bright red sequinned dress. Though years later she disclosed that it had been unwittingly done, with not obtained her sleeve span in to consideration when waving to fans. Speaking to Busy Philpps on her behalf E! talk show past November, Roberts explained:”It was not so much a statement since it’s just a portion of the announcement I create as a human on our planet for myself personally .”

Recently however, actor Ezra Miller has pushed the borders of both men’s red carpet style–that typically is composed of a tailored suit and bowtie –donning a dark Moncler x Pierpaolo Piccioli puffer gown with a black lipstick to match at the Parispremiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald last November.
