Abhay Deol on Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: Awards called Hrithik Lead, demoted me to Supporting Actor

Abhay Deol is the latest actor who has spoken out about the ‘covert, overt, and unfair ways industry lobby against you. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a perfect example. Abhay posted on Instagram about the award functions that made Farhan and him ‘supporting actors’ instead of main leads. Farhan was fine with it, but Abhay protested.

His caption includes the hashtag ‘Familyfare Awards. This is a subtle dig at Filmfare Awards. They nominated Farhan and Abhay for the best Supporting Actor award’, as well as Katrina and Hrithik in the respective ‘Best Actor and ‘Best Actress’ categories.

“‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, released in 2011. Need to chant this title to myself everyday nowadays! Also a great watch when anxious or stressed. I would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads, and nominated us as “supporting actors”. Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as “actors in a leading role”. So by the industry’s own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes. There are many covert and overt ways in which people in the industry lobby against you. In this case it was shamelessly overt. I of course boycotted the awards but Farhan was ok with it. #familyfareawards,” wrote Abhay on Instagram.

The fairness (or lack of it) of Bollywood award shows have time and again made it to the news. Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and the fact that his last film, Chhichhore (a film about suicide and living life without worrying about the results) did not do well at the awards show is the context. Sushant’s fans took to social media to criticize the industry’s favoritism and nepotism for Ananya Panday who won the Best Female Debut Award for her role as Student Of The Year 2.

Chhichhore was also nominated for five categories, including Best Film. However, she did not win any awards at the Filmfare Awards 2020.

In fact, Ananya Panday’s award had raked up a storm on Twitter even at the time she was awarded the Best Female Debut trophy, but like all things on social media, the outrage didn’t last long.

In the past, many actors have pointed out how unjust Bollywood awards were and how they ran on, which Abhay Deol calls a ‘lobby”. An old video of Salman Khan had gone viral earlier this year, where the actor said he would ‘not go up and pick up a Filmfare or any stupid award’.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara featured Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol as the main characters. Farhan Akhtar was Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar were also in the film. Zoya Akhtar directed the film. It was a story about the fragility of life and how we need to live each moment.
